Four Reasons Your Car’s Brakes are Getting Noisy

Your car’s brakes are a huge safety feature in your car and if they go out, you have big problems. Certified Auto Repair wants to help you to understand some of the various situations that might contribute to brake noise.

The Brake Pads Are Wearing Out

When your car’s brake pads are starting to wear down, you need to know before your brakes completely go bad. That’s why brake pad manufacturers include a device called a wear tab in the layers of the brake pad. As the pads gradually wear down, eventually that wear tab is exposed and it starts to make a squealing noise when it makes contact with the brake rotors. That’s when you start to hear brake noises and hopefully get them checked, finding out that you need to replace those brake pads.

There’s Glazing on the Brake Pads

Another time you might hear brake noises is when the brake pads aren’t worn down but have developed glazing on the outer surface. Glazing forms when the brake pads get really hot and then cool down again. The outer surface develops a glassy surface that makes a lot of noise when the brake pads come in contact with the rotors. The glazing wears off quickly, so the noises should stop afterward.

There’s Moisture in the Brakes

If you’ve gotten moisture in the brakes anywhere, you may hear noises related to that as well. This can happen on rainy days or when you’ve driven through a puddle. It can also happen if the car has been sitting for a few days and the weather has been damp. The moisture contributes to rust forming in various parts of the brakes, and as those parts move, they are likely to creak and squeak, sometimes making a lot of noise.

Some of the Brake Parts Are Damaged

You may also hear some new and loud noises from your car’s brakes if there’s damage to any of the parts that make up the brake system. There are a variety of parts that contribute to the brake system, and if any of those fail in any way, it can cause not only noise but big problems stopping safely. It’s important to get any new noises checked out quickly.
