How Can I Tell if My Brakes Are Going Bad?

Your brake system will give you signs that it is going bad when it needs to be serviced or repaired. This being said, Certified Auto Repair recommends you have the brakes inspected every 12,000 miles to prevent problems. The brake system is crucial to your safety when you are driving your car, truck, or utility vehicle. If you notice any of the following issues, bring your vehicle to our shop right away.

A Spongy or Soft Brake Pedal

A change in the resistance that your brake pedal gives you is an indication that you have air in the brake lines. If the pedal feels spongy, soft, or sinks all the way to the floorboard, you may also have a malfunctioning master cylinder.

Brake Fluid Leaks Underneath Your Car

Brake fluid will leak underneath your automobile behind the wheels. The color of the fluid is usually light brown to dark brown depending on its age. In some cases, your brake fluid may also be red. Leaking brake fluid can reduce the level to the point that you won’t be able to stop your automobile.

Burning Carpet or Chemical Odors

Another dangerous condition that prevents the brakes from working is overheating. When the brake pads glaze because they are overheating, you will smell burning carpet. If the brakes are so hot that the brake fluid is boiling, you will smell burning chemicals.

Dashboard Warning Light

Your brake system is equipped with two dashboard warning lights. If the ABS light comes on when you apply the brakes or while you are driving, there is an issue with the antilock brake system. If the Brake light turns on under the same conditions, the brake system is malfunctioning.

Noises When You Apply the Brakes

Braking should be relatively silent. You shouldn’t hear squeaking, squealing, grinding, or scraping. If you hear any of these noises, this is an indication that the brake system is overheating or that you need to have your brake pads replaced.

Vibration When You Apply the Brakes

Finally, braking should also be relatively smooth. Your vehicle should not vibrate or wobble when you apply the brakes. If it does, it’s possible that the surfaces on the rotors are warped and they need to be resurfaced. It’s also possible that you have a rock stuck in a caliper.
