Five Items to Add to Your Car Survival Kit

Don’t already have a car survival kit? It might be a good idea to put one together for each vehicle you own. Certified Auto Repair has some tips that can make this task a lot easier.

Blankets, Extra Clothes, or Sleeping Bags

If you’re ever stranded by the side of the road, you may not be able to keep the heat going in the car. That’s when blankets, sleeping bags, or even throwing on an extra layer of clothes can help. The change of clothes can come in handy at other times, too, of course.

Lighters or Matches

Ideally you wouldn’t need to start a fire, but if it’s a situation where you’re stranded and you have to wait in the cold for help then it makes sense to have a way to get warm. Most people don’t think about the fact that their car lighter won’t work if the car doesn’t turn on, though. You never want to start a fire that would be unsafe, however, so this would be something you’d want to do thoughtfully and carefully.

Non-perishable Food Items and Water

Again, if you’re stranded, you might not have eaten in a while. Having some non-perishable food right there in your car, along with water, can help you to be more comfortable. You’ll also be able to avoid dehydration, which can become a serious problem quicker than you think in cold weather.

Power Packs, Batteries, and a Jump Pack

Technology is great, but it needs power in order to function. Having charged power packs and spare batteries can be crucial. These are something you’ll want to check on often to make sure that they’re fully charged and ready to use. It’s never good to have these items, need them, and then find out that they’re useless when you do truly need them. A jump pack can help you to get your car’s battery started even if there isn’t another car around.

Extra Fluids for the Car

Something else you might want to take with you is an array of small bottles of various fluids. In winter it’s much better to add antifreeze than water, for instance, so if you do run low, you’d be able to top up. Some fluids to consider in addition to antifreeze might be oil and brake fluid.

One of the best ways to help yourself avoid a breakdown is to keep up with regular maintenance. Give us a call at Certified Auto Repair in Henrico, VA today. We’ll be happy to check everything over for you.
