Signs My SUV’s Exhaust System Is Malfunctioning

Bring your SUV to our auto service shop right away if you are having any of the problems listed below. These problems are signs that you have a malfunctioning exhaust system. The exhaust system can malfunction if any of the parts wear out, get clogged, or start to leak. The exhaust system will also malfunction if somebody steals your catalytic converter.

Loud/Roaring Engine

In fact, a sign that your catalytic converter has been stolen is a loud and roaring engine when you fire up your SUV. This can also be an indication that it is time to replace the muffler. If the muffler has a hole in it or is damaged, your engine will be extremely loud, especially when you accelerate.

Strange Tapping Noises

Another strange noise that can come from the engine if there’s a problem with the exhaust system is a tapping noise when you first start the SUV. This points to a leaking exhaust manifold or gasket, as the tapping sound is the noise the exhaust makes when it leaks out of either exhaust system part.

Poor Engine Performance

The reason why your SUV is equipped with an exhaust system is to remove the exhaust from the combustion chamber so the engine can continue to produce combustion. If the exhaust is left in the chamber, the engine will perform poorly because it will affect the combustion production.

Reduced Fuel Efficiency

Unfortunately, if your SUV engine is having problems performing, it will consume more fuel. Consequently, this will reduce your fuel economy and you will have to fill the SUV more often. This can get extremely expensive with a large gas tank in an SUV.

Damaged/Hanging Tailpipe

Your exhaust system may also malfunction if you damage the tailpipe or it is hanging too low. This can happen if you hit the tailpipe on the road or it gets hit by a large piece of road debris. If you live in a humid climate, the tailpipe can also get corroded and end up with pools in it.

Fuel/Exhaust Smells

Finally, avoid driving your SUV if you can smell exhaust or fuel inside of it. This is a sign that the exhaust system is clogged or leaking. It can also be a sign that the catalytic converter has been stolen. Either way, inhaling the exhaust is extremely dangerous to your health.
